Home blood-pressure readings and diary
These are general adult instructions. Follow your clinician's plan; pregnancy and some conditions need different targets and advice.
Get ready
- Use a validated upper-arm monitor with the correct cuff size, and the arm recommended by your clinician.
- Avoid smoking, caffeine and exercise for 30 minutes beforehand. Sit quietly for at least 5 minutes.
- Sit with your back supported, feet flat and legs uncrossed. Rest your bare arm on a surface at heart level. Follow the cuff's positioning instructions.
Take and record
- Remain still and quiet. Take two readings at least 1 minute apart.
- For diagnostic monitoring, readings are usually taken morning and evening for at least 4 days, ideally 7; use the schedule agreed with your clinician.
- Write down both readings, date, time, pulse if shown, and any symptoms or relevant medicine timing. Keep all readings for your clinician to review.
- Do not change your treatment using the diary alone.
When to seek help
- If the top number is 180 or higher, or the bottom number is 120 or higher, rest and repeat after at least 1 minute. If it remains this high, contact a clinician promptly.
- With chest pain, severe breathlessness, new weakness, vision change or difficulty speaking, seek emergency help immediately; do not wait for more readings.
