Prediabetes: make the next step specific

An abnormal glucose result is a reason to make a supported plan, not to follow a restrictive internet diet.

Prediabetes means blood glucose is above the usual range but does not meet the criteria for type 2 diabetes. It may cause no clear symptoms. If you have been told you have prediabetes, ask what your result means and when it should be checked again.

A useful plan combines food choices, physical activity and, where appropriate, weight management. Start with an action you can describe clearly: replacing a sugary drink, adding vegetables to lunch or scheduling a manageable walk. Choose something that fits your budget, working hours and physical ability.

Structured lifestyle programmes can reduce the risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes. Their benefits come from a sustained programme and support, not from a single food or supplement. If you have overweight, discuss whether gradual weight reduction would help; weight loss is not a universal instruction for everyone.

Before your next consultation, record the change you tried, any difficulty and the questions you want answered. A plan that you can keep adapting is more useful than a short period of extreme restriction. Do not change prescribed medicines on the basis of general lifestyle information.

When to speak to a doctor

Seek assessment for excessive thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss or other new symptoms. Discuss glucose testing if you have important risk factors.
