Check one everyday route for trip hazards

Falls can affect confidence and independence, and some risks are easy to miss in a familiar home. Start with one route you use often, such as the path from the bedroom to the bathroom. Check it in the lighting you actually use, including at night.

Look for loose rugs, trailing cables, clutter, slippery surfaces and poor lighting. Keep frequently used items within easy reach so you do not need to climb on furniture. Ask for help with changes you cannot make safely yourself. Appropriate footwear and secure handrails can also matter.

Home safety works alongside strength, balance, vision and a review of medicines when appropriate. Exercise should match your ability, and someone with dizziness or recent falls may need an individual assessment. Do not stop medicines because you suspect they are contributing to a fall; bring the concern to your clinician.

Today, fix one practical hazard or arrange help to do so. If you have fallen, report it rather than dismissing it as simply part of ageing. Understanding why it happened can help guide the next steps and restore confidence in moving around.

When to speak to a doctor

Arrange assessment for falls, new balance difficulty or dizziness. Seek urgent care after a fall with a head injury, severe pain, inability to bear weight or loss of consciousness.
