Healthy ageing is strongly influenced by function: the ability to move, think, communicate, manage daily activities and remain socially connected. Many of the same habits that protect health in midlife become even more important with age.
Protect muscle and balance
Regular aerobic activity, resistance exercise and balance training help preserve mobility and reduce deconditioning. Protein intake, adequate nutrition and attention to bone health also matter.
Review medicines and sensory health
Medication burden can increase with age. Periodic review can identify duplication, interactions or medicines that contribute to dizziness and falls. Hearing and vision problems also deserve attention because they affect communication, mobility and independence.
Vaccination remains preventive medicine
Recommended vaccines change with age, medical conditions and previous vaccination history. Adult vaccination should therefore be reviewed periodically rather than treated as a childhood-only issue.
Arrange review for recurrent falls, new memory problems, progressive weakness, unexplained weight loss, new urinary symptoms, medication concerns or decline in daily function.
