A medical certificate is a professional medical document, not simply an administrative form. The doctor must have enough clinical information to support the statement being certified. The exact assessment depends on whether the request concerns sickness absence, fitness, travel, insurance, employment or another official purpose.
What to bring
- Identification and the exact form, template or written requirements from the organisation requesting the certificate.
- Relevant medical records, hospital discharge letters, investigation results or medication list.
- For fitness-to-work or occupational documentation, a clear description of the job or activity being assessed.
- For travel-related certification, itinerary and any airline, insurer or destination-specific requirements.
Malta Blue Medical Certificate
For eligible employees or self-occupied persons claiming Sickness Benefit, the Blue Medical Certificate must be completed by a medical practitioner. The Department of Social Security states that it should be submitted within 10 days from the first day of sickness, except in specified circumstances such as hospitalisation or treatment abroad.
Longer sickness absence
Current Malta Social Security guidance states that if sickness continues for more than 14 days, the Blue Medical Certificate is renewed every 14 days while the person remains unfit for work. The Department also states that a person is not required to submit a Blue Medical Certificate to Social Security for illness lasting 3 days or less; employer requirements can still be separate.
