Ear Wax Removal / Ear Irrigation in Malta

Examination first, followed by an appropriate ear-care procedure

Ear examinationThe clinician checks the canal, visible eardrum and relevant history before selecting a procedure.
Suitable wax removalControlled irrigation may be offered when appropriate; wax-softening preparation or a different plan may be needed.
Selected superficial foreign bodiesRemoval depends on the object's position, shape and material, and whether it can be safely accessed.

Healthway Medical Centre offers ear wax assessment and removal in Malta, including ear irrigation when suitable. We also assess accessible superficial foreign bodies in the ear canal and remove them when this can be done safely. An examination comes first, because a blocked or uncomfortable ear is not always caused by wax.

When wax removal may help

Impacted wax can contribute to reduced hearing, a blocked sensation or difficulty examining the ear. Removing it may help when wax is the cause, but it will not treat every hearing problem. Persistent symptoms after removal may require further examination, audiometry or an ENT opinion.

How suitability for irrigation is assessed

Tell us about previous ear surgery, a perforated eardrum, grommets, recent infection, discharge or pain. These findings can change whether irrigation is appropriate. The clinician may recommend wax softeners before a procedure or arrange an alternative service. Do not put objects into the ear or attempt forceful flushing at home.

Superficial ear-canal foreign bodies

An accessible superficial object may be removable after examination. Deep, tightly lodged or sharp objects and unsuccessful attempts require a different approach or specialist referral. Irrigation is not suitable for every material. A suspected button battery in the ear needs immediate emergency assessment because it can cause serious tissue injury; do not wait for a routine appointment.

During and after the procedure

The clinician explains the method and asks you to report pain or dizziness. Irrigation and removal can cause discomfort, canal irritation, infection or injury, so treatment may need to stop if it is not tolerated or cannot be completed safely. The ear is reassessed where appropriate, with advice on persistent symptoms and follow-up.

Important

Sudden hearing loss, severe pain, significant bleeding, or a suspected button battery needs urgent assessment. Some ears and foreign bodies are unsuitable for irrigation and require specialist care.
