Wound and suture care
Follow the wound-care plan given after your procedure. Dressing, washing and stitch-removal instructions depend on your wound and closure method.
Protect the wound
- Keep the wound clean and follow the instructions about keeping it dry and changing the dressing.
- If the dressing becomes wet or dirty, replace it with a clean, dry dressing as advised.
- Wash your hands before touching the dressing. Avoid rubbing, picking or activities that pull the wound apart.
- Do not remove stitches yourself. Confirm whether they dissolve or need removal, and book the review date advised.
If it bleeds
- Apply firm, continuous pressure with a clean cloth or dressing. If blood comes through, add another layer without removing the first.
- Seek urgent help if bleeding does not stop or is heavy.
When to seek help
- Contact the clinic promptly for increasing redness, swelling or pain, pus, fever, a wound that opens, or stitches that come out too early.
- Seek emergency help for uncontrolled bleeding, new loss of feeling, or difficulty moving the affected area.
