After a vaccination
Expected reactions and their timing depend on the vaccine. Read the vaccine's patient leaflet and follow the advice given at your appointment.
Before leaving
- Remain for the observation period advised by the vaccinator.
- Keep your vaccination record and confirm whether another dose is needed.
At home
- A sore arm, mild redness or a small lump at the injection site can occur. Some vaccines can cause a temperature or other temporary symptoms.
- Rest as needed and drink normally. A child with a temperature should not be wrapped in too many layers.
- If pain or fever needs treatment, ask about a medicine suitable for the person's age and health, and follow the label or clinician's instructions.
- Do not give routine preventive fever medicine unless specifically advised for that vaccine.
- Contact the clinic about symptoms that are severe, worsening, unexpected, or not settling as explained by the vaccinator.
When to seek help
- Seek emergency help immediately for trouble breathing, swelling of the mouth or throat, collapse, or a child who becomes limp or unresponsive. These can be signs of a severe allergic reaction.
