Preparing for a kidney and bladder ultrasound
This external ultrasound examines the kidneys and bladder, and sometimes other parts of the urinary tract. A full bladder usually helps the examination.
Before the scan
- Follow the clinic's instructions about how much water to drink and when. Ask reception if these have not been provided.
- Try not to empty your bladder immediately before the scan. If you are very uncomfortable, tell staff; do not force yourself to hold painful amounts of urine.
- If you have a fluid restriction, a catheter, or difficulty holding urine, contact the clinic before following bladder-filling instructions.
- Continue prescribed medicines unless your clinician gives you different instructions. Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
At the appointment
- Gel and a handheld probe are placed on the skin. Staff may ask you to change position or hold your breath.
- You may be asked to empty your bladder and have another measurement afterwards.
- Ask how the results will be reviewed and whether any further tests are needed.
