Collecting a clean-catch urine sample
These instructions are for a midstream urine sample. First-catch, timed collections and catheter samples need different instructions.
Prepare
- Use the sterile container supplied or recommended by the clinic. Label it with your name, date of birth, and the collection date and time.
- Wash your hands. Avoid touching the inside of the container or lid.
Collect the sample
- If applicable, hold the labia apart while collecting.
- Start urinating into the toilet. Without stopping, collect some urine from the middle of the stream, then finish in the toilet.
- Follow the container's fill line, especially if it contains a preservative. Do not discard any powder or liquid from the container.
- Close the lid securely and wash your hands.
Deliver promptly
- Bring the sample to the clinic promptly. If there will be a delay, ask how this container should be stored and the latest delivery time.
- Ask for separate instructions for a child, a catheter, or any specially requested collection.
