Preparing for a blood test
Preparation depends on the test ordered. Follow the instructions given for your appointment.
Before your appointment
- Only fast if the clinic has asked you to. Confirm when fasting should start; plain water is usually allowed for a fasting blood test.
- Do not stop or change prescribed medicines yourself. Ask the clinic about medicine timing, especially if you have diabetes or need to take a medicine with food.
- Bring your test request and a current list of medicines and supplements.
- Tell the person taking your blood if you are worried about needles, have fainted during a blood test before, or take blood-thinning medicines.
After the sample
- Press on the puncture site as instructed and keep the dressing on for the time advised.
- Some bruising can occur. Tell staff promptly if you feel faint or unwell.
- Ask when and how your results will be provided and who will review them.
