Wearing a blood-pressure monitor at home
An ambulatory blood-pressure monitor automatically records readings during your usual day and sleep. Wear it for the period arranged by the clinic.
While wearing it
- Wear loose sleeves. Keep the cuff and monitor in the position shown by staff.
- When the cuff inflates, pause where safe, keep your arm relaxed and still, and avoid talking until it finishes.
- Continue your usual routine as advised. Take prescribed medicines as usual unless your clinician tells you otherwise.
- Keep the monitor dry. Do not bathe, shower or remove the cuff unless staff have confirmed how this should be done for your device.
- Record sleep and waking times, medicine times, activities and symptoms in the diary supplied.
Return and review
- Return the monitor and diary on the agreed date and time.
- Contact the clinic if the cuff slips, the device repeatedly fails, or it causes significant discomfort. Ask how to release the cuff safely if needed.
- Ask when the recording will be reviewed. The monitor does not replace urgent medical care.
When to seek help
- Seek emergency help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, or new weakness or difficulty speaking. Do not wait for the monitor results.
