Preparing for an abdominal ultrasound
Ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images of organs inside the abdomen. Preparation depends on the organs being examined.
Before the scan
- Check your appointment instructions. You may need to avoid food for a specified time; some scans also need a full bladder.
- Confirm the fasting time and which drinks are permitted with the clinic. Do not use a general handout to choose your fasting duration.
- If you have diabetes or need medicine with food, ask the clinic for an individual plan before fasting.
- Wear loose clothing that allows access to your abdomen.
During and after the scan
- You will usually lie on a couch while gel and a handheld probe are placed on your abdomen.
- You may be asked to change position or briefly hold your breath.
- After a routine external ultrasound, you can normally resume your usual activities and eat and drink, unless you have been given different instructions.
- Ask how and when the report will be reviewed.
