What happened?
In a multicentre randomized double-blind phase II trial, 250 adults with overweight or obesity received once-daily VCT220 or placebo for 16 weeks. Mean weight loss ranged from 5.75% to 9.73% across active-dose groups versus 1.61% with placebo. Gastrointestinal adverse events were mostly mild to moderate.
Why does it matter?
Oral nonpeptide GLP-1 medicines could be easier to manufacture, distribute and take than injectable peptide therapies. The field is now moving quickly beyond first-generation GLP-1 products.
Healthway perspective
Sixteen weeks is short, and VCT220 is still investigational. Phase III studies are needed to establish longer-term efficacy, safety and cardiometabolic outcomes.
What this does not mean
It is not currently an approved obesity medicine and the result cannot be directly compared with trials of other drugs that used different populations and durations.
