What happened?

A Nature Medicine phase 1 study enrolled 324 patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma, most of whom were heavily pretreated. Across target-dose levels, the objective response rate was about 42%; at the selected 160 mg dose it was 44%, and higher among patients without previous BCMA-targeted therapy.

Why does it matter?

FcRH5 is expressed broadly on myeloma cells and offers a target distinct from BCMA. That matters because resistance to one immune target can limit later treatment options.

This remains phase 1 evidence. The study was designed primarily to characterize safety and dosing, and serious adverse events were common in this very heavily treated population. Later-phase comparative evidence is needed.

What this does not mean

A response signal in phase 1 does not mean cevostamab is already a standard treatment or superior to existing bispecific antibodies or CAR-T therapy.
