What happened?
The FDA approved insulin icodec-abae (Awiqli) as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycaemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes. The long-acting insulin analogue is administered once weekly.
Why does it matter?
For some insulin-treated patients, reducing basal injection frequency could simplify treatment and potentially reduce day-to-day treatment burden.

Once-weekly insulin requires careful dose calculation because a dosing error has a much longer pharmacological tail than a daily basal insulin. It is not simply a weekly version of any existing dose.
