What happened?

EMA’s committee recommended Gevalka, containing ensartinib, for adults with ALK-positive advanced non-small cell lung cancer. The proposed uses include patients not previously treated with an ALK inhibitor and those previously treated with crizotinib.

Why does it matter?

In the first-line study described by EMA, ensartinib improved progression-free survival compared with crizotinib. The decision reinforces the importance of identifying the tumour’s molecular characteristics.

How to interpret the evidence

This is a treatment for a particular biomarker-defined cancer group. EMA notes adverse effects including rash, liver-test abnormalities, itching and nausea, and recommends supervision by an experienced cancer specialist.

What remains uncertain?

The opinion does not establish that ensartinib is best for every patient, nor does it confirm immediate availability locally. European Commission authorisation follows the committee stage.
