What happened?

On 17 September, the CHMP recommended Povofortay, containing the JAK1 inhibitor povorcitinib. The proposed indication covers adults with active moderate to severe hidradenitis suppurativa whose anti-TNF treatment was inadequate, unsuitable or not tolerated.

Why does it matter?

EMA reports reductions in skin lesions and pain compared with placebo in patients previously treated with anti-TNF therapy. An oral option could broaden the choices discussed in specialist care.

How to interpret the evidence

The medicine requires specialist supervision. EMA lists infections, changes in blood lipids and other adverse effects among its safety considerations. Treatment selection therefore involves both potential benefit and monitoring.

What remains uncertain?

A positive CHMP opinion is a recommendation for authorisation, not confirmation that prescribing or supply has begun in Malta.
